While yes, I think it’s important to understand how printing is done to be a good print designer. And it’s good to be able to write to be able to typeset text. And yes, it’s important to know at least a base of code and understanding of interactive technologies: I’m not entirely excited about to see these roles overlap. What makes design fascinating is that it’s a collaborative process built with teams of craftspeople. So combining processes feels like a cheap move. And debasing of the roles of all involved.

But I would like to see something that bridged the gap between paper and code better. Photoshop is too close to paper for sure. We need better tools. Perhaps CSSedit and the like are that in between step. But the promise of the standards-based web should be better bridges. Better tools in the middle.
