I’ve been working on this problem too at <a href=“http://responsejs.com”>responsejs.com</a>. IMO the data attribute techniques are the most sane. If you put the image in a link then Googlebot can still index it. I hope in the future the W3 will add something to the HTML spec so that images can have multiple sources based on meda attributes, but that’d be years before it was supported.
