Nice technique. I just gave it a go on a site I’m working on. Very easy to implement and always a good idea. This had been bugging me for a while but I’m guilty of sweeping it under the carpet a little bit.
One note. I haven’t tested properly yet but it seems that the img element is automatically removed (or perhaps it’s just hidden) from within the map container should the javascript execute. There may be no need to manually remove it.
