Font rendering is indeed the elephant in the room. Windows really requires hinting that looks good in ClearType as that seems to be the direction Microsoft has chosen.
As for Skolar, Chris, I’ve looked into that font earlier and noticed that it was submitted to Typekit as a Postscript OTF, which means when they convert to a TTFEOT for IE, there are no TTF hinting instructions at all! Fixing that wouldn’t be hard.
