A few months ago, working on an iPhone web app for a client, we came up with the same technique of using an image mask for a spinner One issue we found (and that I confirmed as a “real” bug with an Apple engineer) that could cause problems in how you’ve implemented it is that some versions of Safari (e.g., the version that ships with iPhone OS 3.0) do not apply the linear timing function when there are only 2 frames to the animation.
