Having experimented with this method and other ways of making fancier buttons with text that can be edited, I have reluctantly returned to using image sprites, at least until browser support catches up a bit.
Filament Group have done some excellent work on this subject since the new year, combining sliding doors and sprites with a few browser compatibility tweaks to create a professional result.
