To add on Mat’s comment, even if a responsive image format was agreed upon tomorrow between all major browser vendors (with all the IP & political issues miraculously vanishing), we still don’t have any mechanisms that would enable browsers to efficiently fetch such an image format, without having a negative impact on performance in one way or the other. I don’t think we should give up on a responsive image format, but even in the best case scenario, it’s a long while (IMO 5-10 years) before such a format will be something Web developers can actually use.

I doubt waiting that long is the best course of action.
